Our Method

Our tutoring method is based on a combination of cognitive science research and the experience of our high achieving tutors. Our classes are based on an explicit learning structure that minimises the cognitive load for students and integrates the principles of active recall, testing, and spaced repetition:

  • Class review: Rapid retrieval practice of previous concepts from past lessons. This integrates active recall to combat the forgetting curve.

  • Explicit Instruction: Theory is broken down by our tutors into the smallest possible parts and taught with simple consistent language to students.

  • Guided Practice: Students work through guided example problems and practice questions together with the tutor. As the students gain competence, the tutor moves from a scaffolding role to a guiding role to support student independence.

  • Independent Practice: Student’s work through practice tasks and exam-style questions to build fluency. The tutor observes closely and offers instant feedback so that errors are corrected before they are practiced.

  • Exit test: At the end of the class, students are given a final exit test to assess their retention of class content. Students that don’t pass may be assigned additional homework to further reinforce their understanding.

  • Homework: Students are given questions to do during the week designed to consolidate knowledge learnt in class into long-term memory.
